Our Custom Home Build

We started looking for empty lots in early 2020 until we found the perfect location! Our lot is near the water, quiet neighborhood, in a great school district, and the neighborhood itself is very small! There were actually 2 lots available in the neighborhood, but for the design of our house, we needed a wide and square lot and the other one was long and skinny, so this was the one!

We then were looking for a builder who could make our dream floor plan happen (with a drive through Porte Cochere!) and that’s when we found Thompson Design & Build, Cory Thompson. I firmly believe he was sent to us for a reason and he was meant to be in our lives! After a few revisions of design, we finally nailed down our final design and we were ready to get started!

Once we got framing, things felt like they went fast & slow at the same time! Our house stayed the “big green house” for a while, but we absolutely loved that Cory chose such a high quality product like the Zip System for our home!

The inside framing started to take shape, too! I realized that my pantry is the size of my son’s bedroom from our last house, lol. I love how big it is!!

There was a time when I wanted to have an arched front door, but then decided to add arches in the inside of our house instead – I love the look of an arch, it adds some feminine and unique curves to a space that is usually hard corners.

When drywall started going in was when I could really see the spaces forming, it was so fun to see it happening!

We also decided to skip a fireplace in our living room. We live in the south and also never used our fireplace at our old house. I was worried that we would miss it or that we wouldn’t have a focal point in our living room, but it saved us at least $7,500 and I am still happy with that decision!

Once windows and siding went on the outside of the house, I needed to pick some paint colors. We went with “Little Boy Blu” for our siding and “Billowy Breeze” for the porch ceiling, both by Sherwin Williams.

At first the blue seemed VERY blue and I was worried that it was too much! But I think the color of the Hardy Plank siding contrasted a lot and made the blue look strange. So once it was done, I was so happy with it! Still love it today!

During this time, we also selected our appliances, lighting, paint colors, flooring, tile, and cabinetry/countertops. That was so fun, I would love to get the opportunity to do it again someday for myself! The paint colors we chose are:

Sherwin Williams:
Little Boy Blu: Siding
Billowy Breeze: Porch Ceiling
Snowbound: Main Living Spaces
Quietude: Laundry Room
Riverway: Study
Inspired Lilac: Daughter’s Room
Acacia Haze: Son’s Room

After the paint went in, we added tile! This was really fun because I felt like the world was wide open with possibilities for the tile and the lighting in the house! We got most of our tile from Refine Tile & Floor & Decor! Our LVP is also from Floor & Decor!

Then, the really fun part, my blue kitchen!! Honestly, I wrestled with the idea of having an all wood kitchen, all white, blue island, I honestly was having so much trouble deciding. But then I just went with my gut and decided I wanted blue cabinetry. I’m so glad I did! Hollingsworth Cabinetry did all of our cabinet work and we are so happy!

We chose the color “Haze” by Hollingsworth for the kitchen, “Midnight” for the pantry, “Oyster” for the mudroom, and White for the master bathroom and guest bathroom. I almost did Oyster in the master bathroom but I’m glad I didn’t!

After the round of cabinets, it was time to put in some lighting and that was a blast picking those out as well! All the lighting in my house can be found at this link!

At this point, we are so close to being done!! Add some closet shelving, finish off the stairs and trim work, and do all the landscaping and boom, we’re done!

Thank you to Cory, Robert, Mike, and all the amazing subs for making our dream come true!

Xoxo,
Courtney
